Summary:The Giligil Resource Centre will support the local community by providing computers, internet, Wi-Fi and printing services for education, research and community up-skilling.
The rural community coverage serves four villages with a population of over 5,000 in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea. It is anticipated that 50-75% of these people, both students and adults, would potentially benefit from the Centre.
Facilities to be used are standalone off-grid solar power supply, VSAT satellite system for internet services and local Wi-Fi network, computer workstations on local area network with printer and photocopy machine for all technology and office-based services. Improved water and sanitation will be provided to support and sustain the Centre services.
Challenge:Steven Gagau, the project initiator and manager now based in Sydney, Australia grew up in this rural community and wants to contribute and equip local students and up-skilling residents in the villages to be more an information-based society and users of available technology. The project will improve the opportunities for the children in this area where access to the internet and further training is currently limited and greatly needed.
Limited access to the internet services and expensive data usage by students supporting their education is the challenge from the existing mobile operators' networks. The regular outages on domestic telecommunications and constant grid power supply outages contribute to unreliable and efficient services delivery so the project is being delivered.
Solution:Service delivery of a managed VSAT satellite internet, ICT hardware and computer installations for technology-based services for users' needs capital outlay of equipment for the technology and power infrastructure. The project will provide efficient operational systems for guaranteed online, reliable and available services to users require acceptable service level requirements of the internet, computers and power services. The project fundraising goal is $80,000 and sources can be from various initiatives so any funding will contribute to a worthwhile cause. The itemised project costs components include Satellite Internet $12,000, Local Area Network-Wi-Fi $10,000, Network Computers $14,000, Network Printer/Copier $14,000, Off-Grid Solar Power $16,000 and Contractors $14,000.
Long term impact:The long term impact of the project is the ease of accessibility to technology in the rural communities by users mainly students who predominantly use their mobile phones, tablets if they can afford and laptops of their parents although not common for ordinary low income villagers who are exposed or not technologically savvy use expensive mobile data plans or bundles for their research and school work requiring the use of the internet for information. The available use of a reliable satellite internet service, a Wi-Fi network, LAN connected computer terminals and printing and copying service supported by reliable Off-Grid power will significantly facilitate technology-based services at the Centre for local community users of students, teachers, vocational trainees and residents.
