Summary: | According to UNHCR some 17.9 million people in Ukraine are in need of humanitarian assistance, which equates to around 45% of the civilian population. Of this number, some 5.3 million are Internally Displaced Persons (IDP's), and 8.2 million forced into exile. This is a tragic humanitarian crisis, requiring a massive aid response. The prime objective is to meet immediate lifesaving needs of the crisis affected civilian population to preserve lives, ease suffering and promote self-sufficiency. |
Challenge: | To ensure that donations reach Ukrainian IDP's as quickly as possible through secure, reliable channels. To do this partnerships have been formed with Caritas Ukraine and Rotary Club of Kyiv International. The purchase and delivery of urgently needed medical equipment has also been arranged through the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) working closely with Rotary International Districts and Clubs. |
Solution: | As at May 2023 some $7.2 million in aid has been distributed as follows:
a. $1.43 million to Caritas Ukraine for IDP's within country, and those awaiting transit abroad. This is for the provision of food, temporary accommodation, medical aid and and programs to help traumatised families suffering mental health issues.
b. $2.38 million to AFUO for the acquisition of medical equipment, and transport costs to Europe for transfer to Ukrainian hospitals.
c. $3.23 million to Rotary Club of Kyiv International for IDP shelters. 23 shelters have been established to date in cities across Ukraine accommodating some 11,500 people. |
Long term impact: | To save lives and ease the burden of the war on the Ukrainian civilian population until it is possible to rebuild and return home. |
