Summary:The main focus of the project is for the installation of water tanks, roof guttering, pipelines from local springs to the water tanks and toilets in remote village schools and communities in the Baguia and Viqueque regions of eastern Timor Leste.
Challenge:Baguia and Viqueque regions are very hilly and disadvantaged areas of Timor Leste with many small villages in which the majority of inhabitants live a subsistence lifestyle. Some of the communities have no road access and are accessible only by rough walking tracks. The communities lack clean water facilities and open defecation is still practiced in the region, which leads to various diseases like diarrhea,Typhoid and Cholera. At present, water is carried to the villages and schools mainly by women and children from water sources that may be literally several hours walk away (particularly in the dry season) from their homes and schools. Because of the day time heat and the fact that the water source may on This project seeks to address these issues and benefit these remote communit
Solution:The main focus of the project is for the provision and installation of Water Tanks and roof guttering, building Toilets and provide training on 'How to Wash Hands?" (WASH Training)and Hygiene at remote village schools and communities in the Baguia Sub-district of eastern Timor Leste. It was determined that water collection and storage using 5,500litres galvanised Water tanks along with the installation of roof gutters and connection, where possible, and/or connect to local springs. Toilet blocks would typically have 3 cubicle toilets with water supply and a Wash basin for washing hands. Monitoring and Evaluation of the project in conjunction with Ms Leopoldina (our local Project Coordinator in Timor Leste) and team who will collect information on monitoring and evaluation.
Long term impact:a) Training locals how to install Water Tanks and their associated pipework and Guttering and how to build Toilet cubicles and use power and hand tools safely. This will enable to build local capacity and the maintenance of Water Tanks and Toilets for long term sustainability point of view. b) Training in WASH program and, teaching hygiene and hand washing in schools and village communities. c) Supplying water to these remote village schools will be a huge benefit to these children and provide them with more time to sleep and study. d) The Water Tanks will be manufactured locally using high quality colorbond steel from Australia. The local villagers and school students will therefore be benefited for years to come.
