Summary:South Australia's mid-North region has been severely impacted by drought with farming land dry and baron and livestock feed running out fast!
Challenge:Grain crops in 2024 have been estimated to be 93% below average yield. Beyond livestock feed, the impact of the drought with the heartbreaking hardships the farming families themselves are facing as they watch their animals deteriorate. Mental health issues are often paramount. Some families themselves go without to ensure their livestock survive.
Solution:This Rotary project in partnership with the Farmers Relief Agency Ltd intends to raise funds for the purchase of bales of hay from interstate growers which will be transported to the impacted regions. The Government of South Australia, Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) has already committed to paying freight costs for transport costs to the impacted region.
Long term impact:Future initiatives will also be the ongoing support to those impacted families so that they remain productive farmers.
