Summary:The project is to provide 150 wheelchairs for handicapped children on the island of Java in Indonesia. The outcomes for these children will be improved mobility, increased life expectancy, provide easier access to education, healthcare, food, and water, and improved social integration, life satisfaction, and employment opportunities. The project will be liaising with "Wheelchairs for Kids", a not-for-profit organization based in Western Australia which builds wheelchairs for children suffering from a disability in developing and war-torn countries. This is the partner project for David McPherson, District Governor of Rotary District 9790, and was chosen by his twin children Lily and Liam.
Challenge:The World Health Organisation estimates that at least 10 million children worldwide are in dire need of a wheelchair. In developing countries where public health care and other social services are under-developed, families often have to take on full-time care of children with disabilities. Their hardship is compounded because the carer is unable to join the workforce and contribute to household income. What's more, in many cases a child intellectually capable of attending mainstream school is denied the opportunity because of the absence of a wheelchair.
Solution:This project aims to provide 150 wheelchairs for handicapped children on the island of Java in Indonesia. The wheelchairs will be built by "Wheelchairs for Kids" (WFK), a not-for-profit organization in Western Australia that builds robust wheelchairs capable of being adjusted to each individual child's requirements. WFK organizes an occupational therapist to fit and adjust the wheelchair for each child.
Long term impact:The wheelchairs will provide improved mobility for these children, increased life expectancy, provide easier access to education, healthcare, food, and water, and improved social integration, life satisfaction, and employment opportunities.
